Meet the team: Polly

Meet Polly – our wonderful Charity Officer.

Polly Anna Steiner

Role at Grassroots:
Charity Officer

What is the best thing about working at an organisation like this?
Working in such a fantastic team of dedicated and kind people, as well as knowing that all of the work is supporting a positive culture shift in de-stigmatising mental health and suicide, and in doing so, helping save lives.

Which project has given you most enjoyment? Or are you most proud of?
I have really gained so much from working collaboratively across teams at Grassroots, to support the amazing projects being rolled out. I have also loved working with small and medium enterprises across West Sussex to engage them with funded training opportunities. The people facing aspect of my role has already yielded enlightening exchanges and deeper insights into the challenges faced by businesses, in the wake of the global pandemic and the socio-economic issues it has highlighted.

What are you looking forward to in the year ahead?
Supporting further research, communications and engagement ahead of the launch of the e-Learning platform and a wider in-house Grassroots training programme. I am excited to have the chance to participate in a range of Suicide Prevention training as a customer to support my other role as a community Yoga teacher, soon.

What will you take and keep from lockdown?
The fact that the Mutual Aid movement was a citizen led innovation fills my heart with hope for the power of community organising, and people-led change for the greater good. Communities looking out for each other through the pandemic has really inspired me, seeing there is a shared understanding that we are all connected in our struggles.

And what will you gladly leave in lockdown?
Seemingly endless zoom and online meetings. Screen fatigue, and eye strain.

How do you relax?
Music – mainly listening but sometimes making it, poetry – mainly reading but sometimes writing and performing it, yoga, pranayama, bike rides in the sun when it makes an appearance in Yorkshire, wild swimming, and muddy dog walks.

Favourite sandwich filling?
Roasted red peppers, pesto, sweet chilli hummus, pan-fried halloumi with honey & rocket- and it’s got to be accompanied by sweet potato wedges.
