Who developed Stay Alive?

Grassroots is a UK leader in the suicide prevention space, known for its pioneering and innovative approach. We believe that suicide can be prevented through open, direct and honest conversations. We call this Real Talk. Stay Alive is a Real Talk product brought to you by Grassroots. This app has been developed by Grassroots and built by Switchplane.

What is the Stay Alive App?

A free, award-winning suicide prevention resource. The first of its kind in the UK.

The Stay Alive app has been developed with you in mind. It draws on the ideas, skills, and collective wisdom of the whole community. As the needs of Real people change, the app will evolve to meet those needs. Real people in Real life, who need Real Talk about suicide.

You don’t need to be a professional caregiver – the Stay Alive app is for everyone. If you are thinking about suicide or worried about someone else, the Stay Alive app is for you.

How to use the Stay Alive App?

We hope you will use the app and share it with your family and friends. We know it has helped others, and we hope it will be part of your recovery too. We want you to know that thoughts of suicide can change, and recovery is possible.

We know that each person has their own unique experience. With this in mind, we have created an app that can be personalised to reflect your own journey, what matters to you, and enabling reminders of the things that might help your recovery.

These are the features that you can fill out to personalise the app:

  • A Safety Plan to use if you have a crisis and need to keep yourself safe.
  • You can upload photos from your phone to the LifeBox. Store memories important to you, such as photos and inspirational quotes.
  • Add your own crisis support phone numbers in ‘Find Help Now’ and ‘Safety Contacts’ page.
  • Fill in your own ‘Reasons for Living’. Browse through the list of reasons by suicide survivors to help you write your own.
  • Add to the list of ideas for taking care of yourself in the Wellness Plan. The Wellness Plan contains prompts to help inspire you to think of your own, unique to you.

It can be helpful to fill these parts in at a time when you are feeling okay, so that they are there when you meed them. Don’t worry if you don’t want to fill them out; the app still has lots of helpful information and resources.

“This weekend I found the online support list and the keeping safe for now section helpful and made me feel less lonely. Unlike so many mental health apps yours is not patronising and doesn’t claim to ‘fix’ anyone. No app will ever be able to fix me but it kept me company during a very long, dark weekend. Thank you for that.”

“The app helped me help someone else to stay alive by introducing and making clear the option of ‘stay safe for now’. This was so helpful for the young person I was working with who felt as if she had no choice other than to try and kill herself given how hopeless she felt.”
