Responding to an Unexpected Death Toolkit Training
We are providing a programme of training to equip all schools and colleges across West Sussex with the knowledge and skills needed to be able to implement the West Sussex 'Responding to an Unexpected Death' Toolkit and be able to respond effectively to support the school community in dealing with the aftermath of a bereavement.
Although unexpected deaths in children and young people are uncommon, it is helpful to be prepared. A sensitive and considerate response, tailored to the person who has died and taking their family’s wishes into account, can improve the long-term outcomes for those impacted.
Leading the response to an unexpected death can feel overwhelming. You are not alone in this process and West Sussex County Council will prioritise supporting your school or college community to respond and recover. It is important that you work as a team, look after each other, and seek support for yourself.
All attendees will receive a certificate of attendance, a hard copy of the toolkit and access to a suite of additional resources.

Heads’ Briefing
This is to provide an overview of the 'Responding to an Unexpected Death' Toolkit and training, to answer questions and to explore the immediate response and support that a school receives from West Sussex.
This is an opportunity for leaders to consider who they may want to send on the other training options and who is part of their crisis response team.

Implementing the Toolkit
This training is being delivered as a full-day, or two half-day options, face to face, and is for anyone who will play a role in responding to an incident and coordinating activities to support the recovery of the community, including communications.
The course will explore the 'Responding to an Unexpected Death' Toolkit in depth, using case studies to explore good practice and how to support individual young people who may be struggling.
The training includes those who may be more vulnerable to the impact of a bereavement and how we can support them.

A webinar to increase understanding of the potential impact of an unexpected death, vulnerabilities in young people and how to talk to and provide support for young people.
This training will provide participants with an overview of the 'Responding to an Unexpected Death' Toolkit and the knowledge and skills of how to identify and support young people who are finding it hard to cope with what the impact of bereavement.
