Grassroots Suicide Prevention works in partnership with East Sussex County Council to deliver a range of mental health and suicide prevention training courses.

These training courses are part of a wider effort to enhance mental health awareness, address the stigma associated with mental health issues, and promote the overall mental wellbeing of everyone across East Sussex

Available training

ASIST (two days)

This two-day workshop provides participants with practical skills and knowledge to effectively recognise those who may be at risk of suicide and conduct a suicide intervention. Through highly engaging skills practice, attendees learn how to assess risk, engage in open conversations, and develop safety plans to support individuals experiencing suicidal ideation. By emphasising a collaborative and compassionate approach, ASIST equips participants with the tools needed to provide immediate assistance and guide individuals towards appropriate professional help.

Suicide First Aid (one day)

This in-depth one day course teaches the necessary skills and knowledge to recognise individuals showing signs of suicidal ideation. Through interactive learning and practical exercises, attendees will learn how to competently intervene and implement suicide-safety measures as a form of first aid intervention. Accredited by City & Guilds of London, the programme offers the opportunity to attain six NQF credits at Level Four after completion of a further optional module.

Understanding Self-Harm (3.5 hours)

This engaging workshop provides participants with a detailed understanding of contributing factors, triggers, functions and signs of self-harm and a clear and effective intervention framework for support. The session combines various teaching methods including discussion and experiential exercises, with a wide array of practical strategies and resources that participants can use with someone who self-harms.

Caring Connections (one day)

This expansive workshop focuses on equipping participants with the knowledge and skills to identify and effectively support those at risk of suicide within a trauma-informed framework. Through interactive activities, case studies, and practical exercises, participants will gain the tools needed to identify, assess, and support individuals at risk of suicide, while also fostering their resilience in the face of challenging circumstances.

Crisis To Recovery (two days)

This engaging workshop provides participants with a detailed understanding of contributing factors, triggers, functions and signs of self-harm and a clear and effective intervention framework for support. The session combines various teaching methods including discussion and experiential exercises, with a wide array of practical strategies and resources that participants can use with someone who self-harms.

Mental Health Awareness (half day and one day)

This training provides a general introduction to mental health, including the impact of stigma, recognising the signs in those around you, ways to start the conversation with someone you’re concerned about and how to look after your own mental health and wellbeing. The course also provides valuable information about available local services. Delivered by Mind in Brighton & Hove.

Building Resilience & Coping with Stress (half day and one day)

This workshop is designed to help employees better manage stress and build resilience. We examine the impact of stress in the workplace and look at ways to reduce stress by recognising the signs and triggers, improving communication and new ways to look after your own mental health and wellbeing at home and at work. Delivered by Mind in Brighton & Hove.

Introduction to Supporting Mental Health (half day and one day)

This training looks at the impact of how mental health is managed on employees and employers, providing tools to help managers understand mental health and improve communication in order to better support employees at work and to manage absence. This course also explores how employers can create a mentally healthy workplace and promote an open culture, promoting workplace wellbeing for all employees. Delivered by Mind in Brighton & Hove.
