Stay Alive urban art project

This was a project engaging young people creatively to promote suicide prevention in their communities, whilst creating on-street adverts for our mobile phone app Stay Alive.

In Stage One, the Stay Alive Urban Art project began with an impressive piece by Graf Inc. on the side of ShakeAway (Bond Street).

Angela and Alberto of Graf Inc., working with Grassroots, held two free workshops for people aged 16-25. They provided opportunities to learn basic street art skills, such as stencilling and spraying, alongside a safe space to talk about issues around mental health and suicide.

More art came out of the workshops and, by arrangement with the Council, some was painted on electical boxes in our city streets (electrical boxes painted with art have become a hugely popular feature of the streets of Brighton & Hove).

This project was funded by the 2015 Mental Wellbeing Innovation Fund (Brighton & Hove City Council and NHS Brighton & Hove).

Stage Two involved painting the large electrical box at the rear entrance to the Brighton Station (Stroudly Road). We wanted more awareness of suicide prevention around the station, to help those people visiting the city to those commuting on their way to work.

By promoting the app around the station, we hope to inform the public that they are not alone with their, or others’, thoughts of suicide. The station staff have agreed to promote the app themselves through poster campaigns near the box within the station.

These initiatives were funded by Healthy Neighbourhood Fund – London Road.
