Funded suicide prevention training in Kent

Grassroots Suicide Prevention are working in partnership with Kent Public Health to deliver a programme of fully funded training on suicide prevention in the context of domestic abuse.

This training supports professionals to recognise and respond to suicidality where domestic abuse may be a factor, across a range of roles and settings.

All training is fully funded by Kent Public Health. Places are limited, and sessions are delivered regularly throughout the year, with a variety of options tailored to different professional roles and levels of experience.

Available training

Suicide Prevention in the Context of Domestic Abuse - Awareness Level

Level: Awareness
Format: Online or in-person, depending on availability.
Length: 3.5 hours

Course overview: This introductory session explores the relationship between domestic abuse and suicidality. It supports participants to recognise early warning signs, respond in a role-appropriate way, understand referral pathways, introduce Stay Alive app resources and consider how to look after their own wellbeing when encountering suicidality.

Open to: Professionals who may incidentally come into contact with people affected by domestic abuse and/or suicidality. This course is not suitable for staff whose sole or main role is domestic abuse specialist.

Suicide Prevention in the Context of Domestic Abuse - Intermediate Level

Level: Intermediate
Format: Modular course or one-day course
Length: Two 3.5-hour sessions or one day

Course overview: This course gives frontline practitioners a deeper understanding of how domestic abuse can drive suicidality and how to recognise and respond to warning signs across telephone, online and face-to-face contact. Participants will learn how to use the NHS England Staying Safe framework, develop trauma-informed suicide safety plans using the Stay Alive app and resources, and connect people with appropriate specialist support. Please note: You must attend both sessions to complete the training.

Open to: Frontline practitioners working directly with people affected by domestic abuse, harmful behaviour, substance use, safeguarding concerns, mental health distress, suicidality, poverty and/or risks to children and families. 

Suicide Prevention in the Context of Domestic Abuse - Advanced Level

Level: Advanced
Format: Modular course or one-day course
Length: Two 3.5-hour sessions or one day

Course overview: This course supports specialist domestic abuse practitioners to manage complex cases involving victims/survivors with suicidality. It focuses on trauma-informed practice, the dynamics and pathways between domestic abuse and suicidality, collaborative suicide safety planning, multi-agency coordination, escalation and protecting practitioner resilience. Please note: You must attend both sessions to complete the training.

Open to: Specialist domestic abuse practitioners whose core role is supporting victims and survivors of abuse, including domestic abuse support workers, refuge staff, IDVAs and other specialist professionals managing complex domestic abuse and suicide risk.

Sustaining Self-Care when Supporting Victims/Survivors and Those Using Harmful Behaviours

Level: Awareness
Format: Online webinar
Length: 1.5 hours

Course overview: This practical session supports professionals to recognise the emotional impact of working with people affected by domestic abuse and suicidality. Participants will reflect on the personal and professional toll of the work and explore sustainable self-care strategies, including recognising stress, vicarious trauma and burnout, using self-regulation techniques and reconnecting with sources of wellbeing and purpose.

Open to: Professionals supporting victims/survivors, people using harmful behaviours or anyone affected by domestic abuse and suicidality.
