Accessing Stay Alive
Stay Alive can be downloaded for free from the Google Play Store and Apple App Store for smartphones and tablets. The web version functions like a website and can be accessed from smartphones, tablets and desktop or laptop computers.
The app is totally free to download and access, and it always will be. No areas are locked or require purchase and Stay Alive contains no advertising.
The app can be used with or without an account, but if an individual wants to access their own settings, content and information on more than one device, we recommend creating an account so that information can be synced.
Use of the app is confidential and the app stores data on the device it is entered into, e.g. on a phone or tablet. If the user has an account, the data stored on their device is synchronised to the web app. Data is encrypted, and transferred and stored securely.
Using Stay Alive for the first time
On first opening the app, users are asked whether they intend to use Stay Alive to support themselves, someone else, or to learn more about suicide prevention. These onboarding screens help us to deliver the right content to each person from the beginning.
People who are at risk will see tailored information to help them stay safe in times of struggle or crisis, while friends, family, and professionals will find information on warning signs and ways to support someone. A short tour also helps users efficiently navigate the app to quickly find what they need.

Yes. At Grassroots Suicide Prevention, we know one of the best ways to prevent suicide is by talking about it. The Stay Alive app is designed to facilitate and encourage conversations for all users, while also giving users a private space to express their feelings and find resources if they are not ready to talk.

Yes. The Stay Alive app is free to use. It is free to access all of the different areas and features and users can do so as often as they want or need to.
The app contains no advertising.
Yes, all guidance and information within the app is reviewed and updated every six months. We run a link-checker daily to ensure the information in the app is correct and functional.
We understand how important it is to avoid a broken link or a disconnected phone number when lives are at risk. If users notice that details for resources are out-of-date, or they feel a certain resources is missing, it can be reported in the Stay Alive web app.
Yes, the Stay Alive app is for everyone.
It is safe for children and young people to use the Stay Alive app, although it can be helpful having a parent, guardian or professional guide them through the different sections to make sure they understand and get the most out of it.

No, once the app has downloaded, internet access is not required as the app stores user-inputted data on the device it is entered into, e.g., a phone or tablet.
There are some scenarios where internet access is beneficial. If someone has an account, being connected to the internet ensures their app contents synchronise successfully. Internet access also allows users to access the most up-to-date Find Help Now database.
