Course information

This in-depth course equips professionals and volunteers working with children and young people to identify, engage in conversation, and offer trauma-informed support, including safety planning to those who might be having thoughts of suicide. The course addresses the unique challenges and considerations of working with children and young people at risk of suicide, including the impact of social media.

Participants gain detailed frameworks for engagement and strategies to support young people experiencing suicidality in diverse settings.

Learning outcomes

  • Describe a range of potential factors, events, situations that might contribute to suicidality in young people including social media.
  • Discuss potential signs that a young person might be having suicidal thoughts.
  • Identify the barriers that might prevent us and them from talking openly about suicide and ways to overcome these.
  • Outline and practice appropriate questioning strategies to facilitate conversations about suicide with a young person.
  • Demonstrate supportive conversations via case studies, including via the written word, including with neurodiverse young people.
  • Discuss crisis intervention strategies and effective collaboration with other agencies and families.
  • Determine appropriate levels of support and deploy appropriate technology such as the Stay Alive app.
  • Use a safety planning tool and list further sources of help/support
  • Discuss and construct ways of increasing your resilience to this work.
  • Access additional resources.
